So, for the last year or so I've been trying to feed my birds fresh-chopped veggies every day instead of the frozen veggie/cooked cereal mix that I used to use. Unfortunately I have a somewhat weird work scheudual, and as a result I sometimes forget, or don't have the energy, or the birds don't want to eat it in the afternoon after four weeks of getting it in the morning. Also, the cockatiels have never really liked chopped veggies in a dish. I never understood why, seeing as how I've been feeding them this way for the last year, and at least one bird grew up eating that stuff. And my conure's not too hot on it either. (the keet loves it, but she's part pig)

So today, after finding out that I get to work a six-day week next week, I'm going back to my old habits. Pre-prepared veggie/cooked cereal mix with kale clipped to the side of the cage (because that is the ONE WAY the tiels will eat their veggies. Weird birds). I gave it up because it was frozen, and probably not as nutritious as fresh, but if the birds don't get their veggies or refuse to eat them if they do they won't be getting the nutrition anyways.

Naturally, it being a year since I last did this, I bought waaaay too much food. And made waaaay too much of the mix. I froze what I could in four icecube trays (ideal for daily portions), but I've got about five pounds of the stuff in two gallon Ziplock bags in the fridge. I'm torn between freezing the rest when the first batch is solid and ready to be bagged, or placing an ad in Craigeslist for someone local who wants some bird food.

It's good stuff, I'd hate to waste it. Broccoli, zuccini, carrots, red bell pepers, cooked millet, wheat berries, golden flax, cranberries, blueberries, straw berries, papaya (I had a bag of frozen fruit that needed to be used up, LOL) sprouted beans of various kinds, and lots and lot of paprika for added vitamin A. But if I keep it I'll have enough in the freezer for the next four months!
