Sandman: A Hope in Hell

Page 1. We learn that the sand in the Pouch is inexhaustible. There are “few others of my kind. Endless” we will met them in future issues.

He goes to talk to the Morningstar (Lucifer, Satan, etc)

Page 2. Title page, A Hope In Hell.

Page 3. He comes to the Gate of Hell. Standard made-of-body-parts-of-the-damned type gate. [I think *someone’s* been reading too much Dante] Dream bangs a gong to announce himself.

Page 4. A demon named Squatterbloat answers. Dream says that “I have many names. But I am the King of Dreams, of the Nightmare Realms.” More names.

Page 5. Dream beats Squatterbloat up for being insolent. Probably the only time we see Dream use physical violence. Another demon appears named Etrigan.

Page 6. Etrigan is Merlin’s demon. He is a rhymer; rhyming demons are high ranking demons. Etrigan tells Dream that Hell has changed. We have this little exchange:

Etrigan: “And if I’ve changed, O King, then what of you?”
Dream: “I have been… absent… for some time. But changed…? Perhaps.”

Later in the series Dream will deny he has changed. Here he didn’t. Interesting.

The wood of suicides has grown since the last time Dream went to Hell. It was once a grove, but now it is a forest.

Page 7. We meet Nada, an old flame of Dream’s that he condemned to Hell. Nice guy. We will see more of her in future series. Note that Dream’s appearance changes.

Page 8. Is it just me, or does Lucifer’s Palace look exactly like Dream’s old castle?

Page 9. Lucifer is a purty boy. Man. Demon. Whatever. Dream tells Lightboy that one of the demons has his Helm, and he wants it back.

Page 10. Lightboy tells Dream that Hell is now a triumvirate. Azazel and Beelzelbub are the other two co-monarchs.

Page 11. Lucifer summons all of Hell’s demons.

Page 12 and 13. There are millions. Wow.

Page 14. Dream takes some of his sand and uses it the find the demon.

Page 15. Choronzon is a Duke of Hell and one of Beelzebub’s creatures. He has the Helm. Since he bought it fairly he Dream challenges Choronzon for his Helm.

Page 16. The Hellfire Club. Cute.

Page 17. This is a classic mage battle. The key is to turn into (or in this case name) something that the other person can’t counter. In this case they also have to keep to the meter (rhythm).

Page 18. I’m not going to go through all the shifts they make. What is interesting about this page is the look that Lucifer gives Dream when Dream changes his tactics. Lightboy *knows* what Dream is doing.

Page 19. Choronzon: “I am the anti-life, the beast of Judgment. I am the Dark at the end of Everything. The end of Universes, Gods, Worlds… of everything.”

Dream: “I am hope.”

Dream wins.

Page 20.. Choronzon pisses off Lucifer by losing. Oops.

Page 21. Dream takes his Helm. Lucifer points out that he can’t leave because he is surrounded by millions of demons. Lucy, “What power have dreams in Hell?”

Page 22. Dream points out that without the dream of Heaven then Hell would have no power.

Page 23. The horde of demons part and Dream leaves. Lucifer vows to destroy him.

Page 24. Epilogue. Ethel Dee has died, and gives her son the amulet.
