Sandman: Imperfect Hosts

Page 1. Two men in a spooky house. It’s dark, swampy, with a graveyard outside. They are brothers, and they are arguing about whether or not one of them is going to open the present that the other one gave him. “You, uh, p-promise it isn’t going to, hmmm, explode? Promise” “What kind of a brother I be if I did that?” “My kind of b-brother.”

As we will see they are Cain and Able. If you don’t know who they are look them up in your nearest copy of the Bible. (ok, that was a bit snarky of me. Apologies)

In the final panel someone knocks at the door.

Page 2. There is something “big and nasty” at the door. Cain makes Able open the door.

Page 3. The something big and nasty turns out to be a gargoyle named Gregory. He is carrying the Sandman. We learn that Sandman is called the Prince of Stories. He is very weak.

Page 4. Sandman is in a bed (yum yum) Able introduces himself to Sandman and says that the house is Cain’s House of Mystery. Gregory apparently found Sandman in the ‘Shifting Zones’. Sandman has a castle he was traveling to when he collapsed.

Page 5. “Before my imprisonment I knew, the journey would have meant nothing to me.” And “I would not have even needed to travel.” He has lost some abilities, and he is exhausted. The dream I punished Alex with used up the last of his strength.

“I had to reach the Gates of Horn and Ivory to reach my castle.” We will find out more about those later in the series.

Page 6. Cain walks in with food, “Good evening, your Highness, Prince Morpheus.” Says he is a ”Purveyor of penny dreadfuls, shilling shockers, blood and thunders, and fust-rate nightmares (sic)”

Sandman asks if Cain has anything made by Sandman. Cain says no, Able hops out of a portrait of himself and says yes they do. The ‘Letters of Commission” which has Sandman’s signature on them.

Page 7. Sandman re-absorbs the letters. Cain and Able ask Sandman where he has been.

Page 8. He answers “I have been imprisoned.” We are at Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane.

Ethel Dee is asking to see her son, whom she has been looking for the last ten years. The son is named John Dee aka “Doctor Destiny” . Ethel Dee is Burgess’s former mistress who stole the Ruby and took Sykes’s amulet of protection.

Page 9. John Dee is very debilitated. “They took my dreams away”. This will make sense in future issues.

Page 10. Cain and Able wave goodbye to Sandman. Cain tells Able to open his present.

Page 11. This is the way to Sandman’s castle: “They way to the center is a slow spiral. One passes the Houses of Mystery and Secrets – old way stations on the frontiers of Nightmare.” He comes to the gates of Horn and Ivory, which he carved when the world was young and order was needed. The dreams which pass through the gates of Ivory are lies, figments, and deceptions. The dreams which pass through the gates of Horn are true. He pushes open the gates of Horn and sees

Page 12 and 13. His castle. Which is crumbling to ruins. A tall thin man greets him and tells Sandman that since he (Sandman) is the incarnation of this Dreamtime the place began to decay with his disappearance. The thin man is Lucien, the librarian. The books in his library began to fade, and then the words disappeared altogether one day. The next day the library of Dream disappeared.

Page 14 and 15. Lucien updates Dream on the changes in Dreaming.

• “The Raven Women has decayed badly. She lives only in Nightmares.” (Nightmares as in a place, not a type of dream. Kindof.)
• The Fashion Thing has been a flapper, mod, punk, ‘Mad Madonna Witch’, ‘Mad Yuppie Witch’ etc.
• Lucien thinks that Cain and Able have been getting weirder then they are normally.

Cain says ‘Something has gone so wrong, and its been getting slowly stranger.. I’ve tried not to …do it to you. So much.” i.e. kill Able. Able opens the present, and its an egg. Cain is trying to be nice to Able. The egg hatches and it’s a really cute gold baby gargoyle, who will be Abel’s buddy as Gregory is Cain’s. Aww, how sweet. Able wants to name him Irving, which pisses Cain off. Gargoyles have to have names that start with G. Able insists and Cain kills him.

Page 16. Dream says that he gets some power back by simply being in Dreaming, but he really needs his missing tools. Lucien recommends going to ‘The Three-in-One’ Urth, Verthandi, and Skald, if Dream is strong enough to summon her.

Page 17. Dream takes the things he needs to summon her from various dreams. A gallows, snakes, honey, crescent moon, and a black she-sheep. He names the Ladies ‘Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos”. We will learn more about the multiple names later.

Page 18. The Three-in-One, the Hecateae, show up.

Page 19. “You might as well call us the Morrigan.” ”Tisiphone, Alecto, and Magera” ”Diana, Mary, Florence, and Cindy” (I think that’s a joke). The Three take the form of a Maiden (“I’m Cynthia”), Mother (Mildred), and Crone (“I’m Mordred”).

Page 20. They switch positions panel to panel, what one eats the other consumes etc… Dream asks for their help in finding his tools. “Help? Heee—Listen to Him! Did you help us against Circe?”

The Three cannot exist apart. Dream will only get one question for each of them (three total).

Page 21. The Maiden tell Dream that the last man to purchase his Pouch was a man named John Constantine. The Mother tells him that his Helm was traded with a demon for an amulet, and the Crone says that the Ruby passed from a mother to a son who tapped its dream magicks until it (and the son’s dreams) were taken away by the Superhumans (panel shows Dee, Batman and Robin. Batman has the Ruby and Robin is tying up Dee).

Page 22. The Ladies leave, after telling him that they hadn’t helped him. They don’t seem to like him very much IMHO.

Able comes back to life.

Page 23. Dream decides to tackle John Constantine and his pouch first. “What could possible go wrong?”

Page 24. Dream passes the House of Secrets. Able is on the front porch, bleeding. He has named the baby gargoyle Goldie.

Sandman: Dream a Little Dream of Me

Page 1. We will see more of this person later. Important notes: She has the Pouch. She’s starving. She’s addicted to the Pouch.

Page 2. Different bedroom.

Page 3. The man from the second bedroom is getting up, brushing teeth, etc. Morning stuff. The radio is playing Sandman or dream related songs. (Mister Sandman) The many in John Constantine. He steps outside and says hello to London.

Page 4. Ed’s Diner. More dream-related songs. (Sweet Dreams). ‘Mad Hettie’ gets John’s attention.

Page 5. Mad Hettie is a crazy (well, not really) homeless women who, according herself and John, is 247 years old. She tries to warn him that the Sandman is coming. She calls him Morpheus (we’ve seen that name before) and the Oneiromancer. Damn, but that guy collects names!

Page 6 and 7. ‘Creeping’ house theft as a sport. Never heard of it, short-lived fashion maybe? Thief gets caught in a dream.

Page 8. John is doing research, but keeps forgetting to research Sandman. John has bad dreams, but that’s normal for him. On the third day Dream shows up, oopsie John! Should have paid attention to Mad Hettie!

Page 9. John thinks Dream has no sense of humor. Heh. Dream asks about the Pouch. John says he knew it was powerful, but never opened it. On this page he says he couldn’t. John tells Dream that it might be in his storage shed.

Page 10. They go through John’s stuff, Dream knows its not there. John realizes that his ex-girlfriend, ‘Junkie Rachel’, must have taken it when she split.

Page 11. They take a taxi ride with one of John’s friends, Chas. More dream related songs.

Page 12. They get to Rachel’s dad’s house. Dream feels the Pouch. He tells John, “This house is dangerous.” John tells Chas to take off at the least sign of trouble. “Your missus hates me as it is. Let’s not giver her a reason to. Eh?”

Page 13. John is remembering Rachel, “Rachel was always playing with the pouch. Kept going on at me to try to open it. She’d ask me, what’s the point of having something magic if you don’t use it?” John is pretty smart, not to use the Pouch.

New power, Dream can unlock doors.

Page 14. Power’s off. Dream can see in the dark, and make a light for John.

Page 15 and 16. Gross stuff on wall (GSOW) send John into a falling-dream. Sandman goes into John’s dream and catches him, waking him up. Coolness. Sandman: “It is never only a dream.”

Page 17. GSOW is A) the remains of Junkie Rachel’s father, and B) still alive. All do to the Pouch. Ewww.

Page 18. GSOW has faces, talks. ‘the woman is ours’ etc. Dream tells them they have exceeded their boundaries. GSOW calls Dream ‘master’, they are dreams of course.

Page 19. They go into Junkie Rachel’s room. Unbelievably she is still alive, no doubt due to the Pouch.

Page 20. She’s gross. Dream takes his Pouch back.

Page 21. She’s dying without the Pouch. John demands Sandman do something. Dream tells him to leave the room.

Page 22. Dream give Junkie Rachel one last dream to take her into death.

Page 23. Dream tells John that Rachel is dead. He tells John that he, Dream, is going to Hell. John doesn’t think Dream means it literally (Dream does) and also thinks that he, John, is damned. [Note: I really need to read Swampthing and Hellblazer. I think I like John].

Page 24. John tells Dream he’s been having nightmares ever since whatever happened to him at Newcastle. Dream understands what John is asking for (sweet dreams).

Sandman: A Hope in Hell

Page 1. We learn that the sand in the Pouch is inexhaustible. There are “few others of my kind. Endless” we will met them in future issues.

He goes to talk to the Morningstar (Lucifer, Satan, etc)

Page 2. Title page, A Hope In Hell.

Page 3. He comes to the Gate of Hell. Standard made-of-body-parts-of-the-damned type gate. [I think *someone’s* been reading too much Dante] Dream bangs a gong to announce himself.

Page 4. A demon named Squatterbloat answers. Dream says that “I have many names. But I am the King of Dreams, of the Nightmare Realms.” More names.

Page 5. Dream beats Squatterbloat up for being insolent. Probably the only time we see Dream use physical violence. Another demon appears named Etrigan.

Page 6. Etrigan is Merlin’s demon. He is a rhymer; rhyming demons are high ranking demons. Etrigan tells Dream that Hell has changed. We have this little exchange:

Etrigan: “And if I’ve changed, O King, then what of you?”
Dream: “I have been… absent… for some time. But changed…? Perhaps.”

Later in the series Dream will deny he has changed. Here he didn’t. Interesting.

The wood of suicides has grown since the last time Dream went to Hell. It was once a grove, but now it is a forest.

Page 7. We meet Nada, an old flame of Dream’s that he condemned to Hell. Nice guy. We will see more of her in future series. Note that Dream’s appearance changes.

Page 8. Is it just me, or does Lucifer’s Palace look exactly like Dream’s old castle?

Page 9. Lucifer is a purty boy. Man. Demon. Whatever. Dream tells Lightboy that one of the demons has his Helm, and he wants it back.

Page 10. Lightboy tells Dream that Hell is now a triumvirate. Azazel and Beelzelbub are the other two co-monarchs.

Page 11. Lucifer summons all of Hell’s demons.

Page 12 and 13. There are millions. Wow.

Page 14. Dream takes some of his sand and uses it the find the demon.

Page 15. Choronzon is a Duke of Hell and one of Beelzebub’s creatures. He has the Helm. Since he bought it fairly he Dream challenges Choronzon for his Helm.

Page 16. The Hellfire Club. Cute.

Page 17. This is a classic mage battle. The key is to turn into (or in this case name) something that the other person can’t counter. In this case they also have to keep to the meter (rhythm).

Page 18. I’m not going to go through all the shifts they make. What is interesting about this page is the look that Lucifer gives Dream when Dream changes his tactics. Lightboy *knows* what Dream is doing.

Page 19. Choronzon: “I am the anti-life, the beast of Judgment. I am the Dark at the end of Everything. The end of Universes, Gods, Worlds… of everything.”

Dream: “I am hope.”

Dream wins.

Page 20.. Choronzon pisses off Lucifer by losing. Oops.

Page 21. Dream takes his Helm. Lucifer points out that he can’t leave because he is surrounded by millions of demons. Lucy, “What power have dreams in Hell?”

Page 22. Dream points out that without the dream of Heaven then Hell would have no power.

Page 23. The horde of demons part and Dream leaves. Lucifer vows to destroy him.

Page 24. Epilogue. Ethel Dee has died, and gives her son the amulet.
